And was pretty much attacked by everyone saying how crappy and unreliable they are (The old ones maybe, but I’ve yet to have a single problem with mine) and was told that they would rather die than drive one to which I replied “Knock yourself out, I won’t stop you.” (I know, I’m all heart)
Wow, overreact much?
Anyway, I just don’t get it? I mean, I know they aren’t to everyone’s taste, but god damn, man, get a life! People have different tastes!
I hate Ford Mavericks (They really are an abortion of design aesthetics. Don’t get me started) but I know some people like them. There are probably people that for some reason, like the Chevy Spark, and that’s okay, too. Misguided, but okay.... Why the hell would people go nuts over what other people like to drive? It’s blowing my mind......And on that note, I’m declaring any post I make today Fiat related......Fiat Friday can’t wait, today is Fiat Thursday, feel free to join me!

The EV Spark is really the only one that has my interest. I’ve got a “thing” for EVs i may go give one a test drive just to see how it stacks up against the Leaf, which I like quite a bit.

Nope. They probably have parents that do though.
When I was a kid I hated Chevys because my parents almost always bought ford or the occasional Toyota. They didn’t hate Chevy but because our family friends only bought Chevys and they always seemed to be in some state of repair I just assumed they were bad and that’s why my parents didn’t buy them.
As an adult I don’t hate them, they just don’t make anything I’d want to own except the corvette.

Those I agree with. I also think part of the problem back then was that Fiat left, so replacement parts were hard to find, so people had to make due with what they could get and drove them without making the proper repairs. If you are old enough to have been around back then, you may remember cars needing a lot more to keep them rolling than they do now.

Nah, they’re bottom of the barrel for mass market brands (with Jeep barely better) on all the reliability surveys. That said, they’re infinitely more reliable than the best you could get a couple decades ago.

According to Warranty Direct in the UK they are much more reliable than most things made by the Germans, plus when they do go wrong it’s for much cheaper and simpler things to fix. Plus Italian cars are cool (I am biased in this opinion though!)

I think my ideal 500 would be white with the red mirror caps, but ideally no red stripe down the side (I don’t know if you can get the caps without the stripe and vice-versa) to keep it looking like a regular 500. The exhaust on those pretty much gives it away.
Also, the only problem I know I'd have with the early 500s is where the USB/aux is located - my understanding is that they put it in the glove compartment and if you try and close it, it can be hell on the cable. I think the new ones have put the ports in a more reasonable location.

Yeah, that’s the setup mine has, but the cable just looks sloppy, not really a problem though, and if you really feel strongly about it, you can get an $8 wireless bluetooth bridge. The new ones moved the port down near the shifter. It’s easier to access for sure, but I like to think that the car should be more about driving than having access to all the digital goodies.

Interesting, I wonder what the problem was...or..if they had the 500L which has the bad mojo of being built in the same factory as the despised Yuko of days gone past...... Maybe those had the automatic transmission. Mine is stick, the way God intended small Italian cars to be. Less stuff to break down.

I’d even take point with the first part. So what if a car is unreliable. Some of my most memorable car I have owned have been the least reliable. I can understand not having an unreliable car as a DD that is your only car, especially if you have any kind of a commute. A good car and a reliable car are often not the same thing.
I was sort of hoping you where gonna say that the old Abarth was your Fiat that you owned. Slightly off topic but first time I encountered an old Abarth 500 was at the Nuerburgring at an Historic car race. I was watching the previous race from the back straight, it hade been a race of old Can Am cars. When the Fiats came by I was surprised, I was not even aware another race had started. I had to laugh watching the Fiat 500’s all down shifting on the straight after the NGK Schikane. Only time I have seen a race in which cars downshift on the straight after the corner.

Yeah, my uncle and dad both had Fiats in the 70s and they really liked them but agree that the cars just didn’t hold up. Most other cars on the road didn’t need head re-torquing and were a bit more resistant to rust. Their cars both rusted away and I want to say were eventually recalled(?) but I don’t remember exactly.

My brother has a 124 Spyder in the 80’s and I’m certain it spent more time in the yard being fixed than it did on the road. Not too much of a rust problem though, but we lived in the south and didn’t have to worry about road salt and that sort of thing. I have heard that the betas were recalled because of rust.

I can’t argue with that logic, but my experience with most American cars I’ve had put them in about the same category. My Japanese cars on the other hand would actually have to be destroyed before the engine stopped running on them. Brand doesn’t matter, (except for Mitsubishi, those suck)

They are cute little cars. I would love to rent one for a day. But for the money, there are so many better cars I can buy. Maybe that is why some people get riled up? The Fiat is nice, but it is all show, no substance. You take away the cute body panels and interior and what you are left with is a cheap engine, cheap suspension, and mostly outdated, cheap parts in fwd.

I hear it all the time (even on here), ‘the Land Rover will just break down’, ‘it’s British so it’ll break’, etc... the vast majority have never set foot behind the wheel of a Landie, Rover, MG, Morgan, Jaguar, etc... and have heard it from somewhere else a few times and merely act as a parrot repeating it for some inane reason.

Wonder if Fiat will get any better once there is some reliability history on the 500X. I haven’t really seen any issues with that body yet (500X/Renegade). The 500L was a piece of crap, especially because of the transmission, so it really drags it down. The regular 500 really isn’t too bad reliability-wise.

The whole company is slowly improving. They had a new model blitz and now every new model year is spent improving the build quality. They finally updated the 9 speed for 2016 which should really help. Half the complaints were with the nine speed. What is surprising is the issues reported with the 8 speed, which is pretty much the Industry Standard for transmissions.
